How to Sew a Easy Summer Shirt

The fabric used to make this men's summer shirt sewing pattern (the Hackney shirt by Sew Over It) was gifted by Minerva. There was no requirement for me to blog about it.

Men's summer shirt sewing pattern: Hackney shirt review

I've had this project in my 'half finished' pile since the end of last summer… With selling my house, moving across the country, starting a new job and writing my book, I unfortunately didn't get a chance to finish it before the winter settled in. But now that the sun is starting to make an appearance again, I decided it was time to finish it at last!

I used the Hackney shirt sewing pattern from Sew Over It – it's one of my all-time favourite sewing patterns. It was the very first sewing pattern I made a few years ago, and I've since sewn 4 shorts using it. Have a look in my garment sewing archives.

As with the other Hackney shirts I've sewn, I adjusted the back slightly to make it narrower. This is easily done by tracing the front and back panels of the pattern onto grid paper, but bringing in the sides slightly (whilst keeping the shoulder and arm holes the same size). It took a bit of trial and error on some toiles before I got the fit how I like it – loose, but not baggy.

I also shortened the arms to make it short sleeved (a summery fabric calls for a summery shirt!). This had the extra bonus of removing the need to make the cuffs and sleeve plackets, which can be a little fiddly and time consuming. I was also tempted to remove the collar to turn it into a grandad shirt style – but decided last minute to keep it in. I'm glad I did!

The Art Gallery Fabrics Sisu fabric I used was a dream to sew with. Lovely and lightweight, but with enough body and structure to hold its shape and press really well. It's really soft too, so it'll be just as comfy against the body as it is over a T-shirt. And it's 100% cotton, so it will be nice and breathable in the summer sun!

I thought I'd challenge myself and pattern match down the central button placket, and on the patch pocket. That abstract pattern made it tricky, but I think I pulled it off?! It's definitely worth the extra time planning and cutting to achieve a pattern match like that. Even on a busy print like this! It looks so much more professional (and gets you extra bragging rights when you tell someone you sewed it!).

To finish it off, I used clear plastic buttons down the central placket. I toyed with the idea of using colourful buttons, or even plain white, instead. But I eventually decided that the fabric is bright and busy enough as it is. Clear buttons let the fabric print do the talking, without detracting or looking over the top.

I can't wait to wear this shirt all through the summer! If you're looking for a men's summer shirt sewing pattern, you can't go wrong with this one. 😎

Happy sewing! – Mike
